OUR STORY
—
THE ORIGIN
Built from a Lifelong Obsession with Books
Some people discover books. Others are simply never without them. It started with Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein and The Magic Tree House — the books that hook you before you know you are being hooked. Those books did not just entertain me. They became part of me. They shaped how I saw the world before I had the words to explain how or why. That is not a small thing. A child finding the right book is not just a fun read — it is a world-shaping experience. And the writers and illustrators who make those books, who somehow compress an entire universe into forty pages for a reader who has not yet learned to be patient — that is one of the hardest and most important things a person can do.
That early obsession grew through science fiction, through film school, through discovering Lovecraft and Hemingway and Fitzgerald, and kept cascading from there. Before books became my profession I played jazz, worked in film, and spent a decade in cybersecurity. Through all of it, in every season of a fairly unconventional life, books were the one constant.
When my daughter was born in 2021 I asked myself the question that changes everything — what kind of life do I actually want to live? The answer had always been the same. It just took her arriving to make me say it out loud.
The moment that made it real was a copy of Hemingway's A Moveable Feast I found on the bottom shelf of a thrift store for one dollar. A book about Paris, and writers, and a young man figuring out what kind of life he wants to live — sitting where it could have simply disappeared. It was Hemingway who had first cracked open the literary world for me years earlier. Finding him again, on that shelf, for a dollar, felt like something closing into place. That was the moment I understood — there are so many books worth keeping, and a lot of them are being lost. I decided to find them and give them the homes they deserve.
Children's books are the core of what we do. Not a category — the foundation. From the earliest illustrated classics through the golden age of picture books to the beloved modern titles that are shaping readers right now, this is where our heart is. Fine copies in beautiful condition belong in homes that will continue to preserve them, and finding those copies is a genuine thrill. But the ones that stop me cold are the worn ones. The copy with the bent corners and the cracked spine from being read fifty times. The one that went on every trip and slept in every bed. And most of all — the one with the name written on the inside cover. Usually in crayon. Usually crooked. Usually one of the first times that child ever tried to write their own name, practicing the letters, claiming the thing they loved. Those copies are not damaged. They are the most complete version of what a children's book was ever supposed to be.
Alongside children's books we carry collectible first editions and, when we find them, the stranger volumes — pre-1800 folklore, occult philosophy, early natural history. When those books cross our path, we are very glad they did.
Windigo Rare Books name is inspired by my daughter, who developed — entirely on her own — a full obsession with windigos, werewolves, and siren heads. I spent a year learning about these creatures alongside her and found myself genuinely fascinated. A creature from Algonquian and Ojibwe folklore, living at the intersection of the natural world and the mythological, of the frightening and the captivating. She does not know it yet, but she named something that matters.
